Travelling While Black

Virtual reality experience with a documentary foundation, created in collaboration with Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams and Ayesha Nadarajah, shot in Detroit. My role in this project was to translate the documentary and testimonial elements of this experimental VR experience into meticulously crafted lighting environments. By shaping the visual atmosphere, I aimed to heighten the realism and immerse the viewer, ensuring that the experience resonated with the authenticity and emotional depth of the subjects' stories, ultimately delivering the most lifelike and engaging visual sensation possible.

“Traveling While Black” is a cinematic VR experience that immerses the viewer in the long history of restriction of movement for black Americans and the creation of safe spaces in our communities. Confronting the way we understand and talk about race in America, “Traveling While Black” highlights the urgent need to not only remember the past but to learn from it, and facilitate a dialogue about the challenges minority travelers still face today.
